MCLA Neighbors Making Noise Over Noise

Sorry for the extended "Manny Ramirez" absence, but he's back (sort of) and so am I. Looks like our friend Wes Flinn got out of town just in time. Neighbors of MCLA's Church Street Center are upset at the level of noise emanating from the building, and are threatening a lawsuit or arrests if the situation doesn't get better, fast. Jennifer Huberdeau has the story in today's Transcript.

Welcome back Kotter-----the Church St. Center is surrounded on three sides by residential property (with maybe one still left on the fourth side)----noise has always been a problem--- weekend parties-on Blackinton----but if you want noise wait until the Red Sox and Yankees play in the play-off (if they meet) I can hear the town house cheering all the way to Corinth St.---Now I don;t have a problem with that---IF-- they are cheering for the Sox---chbpod

Take the complaining houses by eminent domain and build a science building. (Just joking)

Having spent several years in and out of various collegiate music facilities, I think some sound proofing and better AC so that the windows could stay closed would probably solve the problem. Why this has been allowed to fester is puzzling.

In reading back issues of The Transcript, the town/gown issues at NASC used to be much worse. Students were arrested for loud parties, etc... One would think that the two sides would have found some kind of truce by now.

And just what do you expect...they are kids for Christ sake! They are off the leash and free of mommy and daddy and feeling at the top of their game. They haven't had this opportunity since they were let loose at the playground when they were five years old, ever go to a playground full of kiddies,...The noise level is deafening. They are just older versions. And remember that they have been brought up to love thyself and screw everyone else. That's the new American way...So what do you expect! Get a life, or bring your kids up with more respect for others! You reap what you sow and it's Time to bring in the crop!

Greg- your researching is correct--before the 3 year requirement for on-campus housing-- Blackinton St. was a zoo of off-campus housing-- much more so than today---the Boardman block was all students for quite a while------annual rite of spring?? burning a sofa in the middle of Blackinton St----and it was in a resdential area --there were still a number of "locals" that lived on Blackinton and Montana and Porter Sts---I remember when it was legal for 18 year olds to drink---and this WAS a party school--the partying seems to be much more subdued than it was in years past---now the "music"--sure we had a band and a chorus and some music classes--- but we didn;t have a Fine & Performing Arts major either--I think all the music rooms were third floor of Bowman---pretty removed from most residential properties-----as for the science building----- possibly the block from Montana to Ashland----Hoosac to Blackinton ------or- seems more remote (both chance and distance wise) is some property the college owns---just south of the dead end of Corinth St.--- they once thought about an intramural field or off-campus parking for commuters----I really don;t know how much space there is and the access is off Church St.----at the Deadend of Corinth is a 10 foot berm that prevents access----it is adjacent to the Mayor's house-----I don;t think so---chbpod

I hope the neighbor who has essentially threatened making citizen's arrests has wised up. Citizen's arrests are not legal for misdemeanors (disturbing the peace, in this instance). If he were to do so, he could conceivably face felony kidnapping charges!

One thing the college needs to do (and I told them this years ago) is replace the large fiberglass windows with something more soundproof. They do nothing to mitigate the noise.

I have to dissagree.....I will gar-ron-tee, that after one sleepless night, the Mayor will solve the problem "Tout de suite" :~)

Understood...was just makin a funny! :~) The mental picture of the noise emanating from the college property, and the kiddies running amok right under the mayors bedroom winda, is worth a cartoon at least. I wish I could draw!

Miss a day, miss a lot.

Checking in back from the Queen City of the West, perhaps I did get out just in time. Though this was an issue last year during the Blues and Funk Festival - start times were at 7:30pm so that everything would be over at exactly 10:00pm. One second past that and there were complaints.

It's like people had six numbers of the complaint line dialed and were just watching the clock to dial that last one...

Oh, and congrats on the new gig, Andy. I don't know much about that area of PA, but there is a lot of history in them thar parts (as we say back in Indiana).

(who was trying to get the Church Street Center completely refurbished before he left so these things would cease to be problems)
